Falling for Wine

Macomber Turnip Soup
2002 Westport Rivers “Estate Classic” Chardonnay
(about $14, available at www.westportriversgifts.com or 800-993-9695)
Westport chardonnay is lean and fruitful, more French in style than Californian, but still showing that nice dose of toasty oak people love.

2003 Cavallotto “Langhe”
(about $15, available from Classic Wine Imports, 781-352-1100)
This quirky, charming northern Italian white wine is made entirely from pinot nero – the French call it pinot noir – a red grape.

Grilled Salmon with Silky Potato Sauce
2002 Argyle “Nuthouse” Pinot Noir
(about $40, available through www.argylewinery.com and from Paterno Wines, www.paternowines.com)
Winemakers like Argyle founder Rollin Soles have developed unique pinot noir styles over the years, and today his wine speaks with a distinct voice. His Nuthouse pinot is radiant and red, rugged and
dusty, full of ripe bing cherry and soft
pervasive tannins.

2003 Paringa Shiraz
(about $12, imported by Skurnik Wines, 516-677-9300)
You can feel the wonderful weight of this wine as soon as you take it into your mouth. It's dark red, dense and deep with a low center of gravity and flavors of wood, fig, date, and plum.

Always-Crisp Apple Pie
NV Foss Marai Cuvee Brut
(about $17, imported by VinUS,
508-757-5124 and www.vinusinc.com)
This northern Italian sparkler is from a region of steep south facing hills in the Piave River valley. It is a unique blend of sweet Prosecco and zippy sauvignon blanc that's without a doubt one of the gentlest, softest, most pleasing sparklers I've had in a long time.
